A motorbike recently pulled up in front of my window - a delivery for my neighbours.
In high school, my friends and I would regularly drive to our local mall and park at the entrance of cinema. This specific entrance was the closest gateway to the food court which was full of 90's Australian takeout. I imagine this is a lot like most 90's takeout around the world - KFC, Pizza Hut, Donut King, and a Chinese outlet that also seemed to offer Thai, Vietnamese, and fries. We didn't care because we were there for McDonald's.
Our friend Leanne worked there and we could be sure that if we ordered a six-pack of chicken nuggets, we were likely to get two family packs of 20, several over-stuffed packets of fries and, fingers crossed, a soft serve cone with two chocolate flakes jutting out. Anywhere between three and six of my friends would sit in the car park (what Australian's call a 'parking lot') and slowing inhale reconstituted chicken parts a sugary, MSG-laden sauce. It was heaven.
There is something quite chaotic and colourful about the home-delivery of McDonald's, despite the sad brown paper bags crumpled on the back of a bike. It's the ultimate impulse - a last minute, frantic grab to provide nostalgic joy in a gloomy time.
